Geography
In years 7-9, pupils explore their local environment, Welsh coastlines, and natural hazards such as floods and pandemics. They develop inquiry skills, mapping, sketching, data analysis and using GIS, fostering curiosity and understanding of the relationship between people and the environment.
In the GCSE course, pupils study rivers, coastlines, migration, urbanization, weather, climate change and sustainable solutions. They develop fieldwork skills, statistical analysis, decision-making, and evidence evaluation, preparing for life, work and further study.
The A Level course develops detailed understanding of water and carbon cycles, global governance, ecosystems, extreme weather, and economic development. Pupils conduct independent research, developing research skills, critical analysis, and presenting evidence clearly and effectively.
History
Year 7-9 students explore a wide range of historical topics including the Tudors, the Industrial Revolution, the World Wars, slavery, the Titanic, and local history such as Aberystwyth Castle and the National Library. Through these units, they develop key skills such as using sources, interpreting evidence, historical writing, and reflecting on change over time. The curriculum fosters curiosity, critical thinking and understanding of local and global past.
GCSE students study the history of Wales and the world through detailed units on periods such as the Elizabethan Age, the Depression, Russia, Germany, and the United States, as well as a thematic unit e.g. crime and punishment or migration. They develop skills in analyzing sources, historical interpretations, and conducting independent research. The course encourages critical thinking, organizing information clearly, and making connections between periods.
On the A Level and AS Level course, students are offered detailed study of historical periods in Wales, Britain and Europe, such as the Tudors, the Civil War, the French Revolution, and Nazi Germany. Students explore political, social and economic changes over time, using sources and interpretations critically. They also conduct independent research, developing sophisticated research, analytical and communication skills.
