Welsh Faculty

During years 7-9 studies, pupils develop their Welsh skills by studying themes relevant to their lives and identity, such as “Myself”, the local area, school, and Welsh legends like Cantre’r Gwaelod and Branwen. They learn to express opinions clearly, to discuss ideas in groups, and to write creatively and at length. There is strong emphasis on developing oral skills, reading and written accuracy, including mutations, similes, adjectives and paragraph structure. Through studying poems, literary texts and cross-curricular activities, pupils are encouraged to think critically, to self-assess effectively, and to use Welsh confidently and naturally in a variety of situations.

Throughout the GCSE course, pupils develop fluency and confidence in Welsh by studying literary and contemporary texts, including poems, short stories, novels and films. They learn to analyse content, discuss the style and structure of texts, and to express opinions in detail using evidence. The course develops academic writing skills, oral group discussion, and understanding of social, cultural and ethical themes. Through formative and summative assessment work, pupils are prepared for real-life situations, including communication in the world of work, further education, and local and national contexts. Welsh as a core subject contributes significantly to pupils’ identity, wellbeing, and ability to contribute confidently to contemporary Welsh society.

In the Sixth Form, pupils explore Welsh literature in detail, analysing themes, style and context of various texts. They develop critical analysis skills, academic writing, and presenting sophisticated arguments. The course nurtures a deeper understanding of the Welsh language and culture, preparing pupils for further study or the world of work.
