Physical Education
In years 7, 8 and 9, pupils take part in a wide range of physical activities including team games, athletics, outdoor activities and fitness. The programme develops technical skills, cooperation, resilience and understanding of a healthy lifestyle, preparing pupils for further study and awareness of physical and mental health.
The GCSE course combines theory and practical work. Pupils study physiology, sports psychology, training, and social issues in sport, alongside performing in three physical activities. One activity is linked to a personal fitness programme, developing analytical skills, self-regulation and performance.
The A Level course offers detailed study of physiology, psychology, sociology and biomechanics of sport. Pupils are assessed as a performer, coach or official, and conduct research to improve their own performance. The course develops critical understanding of sport and fitness, preparing pupils for higher education or careers in health, sport or teaching.
Food Technology
During years 7 to 9, pupils develop practical skills in cooking safely and effectively, learning about nutrition, food hygiene, and basic cooking processes. They explore cultural and environmental influences on food choices and have the opportunity to create balanced meals using a variety of ingredients.
The GCSE course in Food and Nutrition combines theory with practical work. Pupils develop a detailed understanding of nutrition, food safety, cooking science and food production processes. Through practical assessments, they plan, prepare and present meals, developing analytical, organizational and evaluation skills.
Health and Social Care, and Childcare
This GCSE course offers a detailed understanding of human development, wellbeing, and the services that support individuals throughout their lives. Pupils explore how social, physical and emotional factors influence growth and development, and learn about the importance of prevention, health promotion, and providing ethical care. The qualification includes written assessments and practical assignments, developing research, analysis and creativity skills. It offers a solid foundation for further study or career paths in health, social care and childcare.
This A Level qualification offers a choice between two pathways: Childcare or Health and Social Care for Adults. The course develops detailed knowledge of human development, psychological and social theories, and the legislative frameworks that govern care provision in Wales. Pupils explore contemporary issues, learn about working in partnership, and develop research, analysis and communication skills. The qualification includes examinations and practical assignments, and prepares pupils for higher education or careers in health, social care, teaching or childcare.
